History of The Walters Art Museum
The collection, amassed substantially by William T. Walters and his son Henry, and eventually bequeathed to the City of Baltimore, presents an overview of 55 centuries of world art from pre-dynastic Egypt to 20th-century Europe. Among its many treasures are Greek sculpture and Roman sarcophagi, medieval ivories and Old Master paintings, and 19th-century European and American masterpieces. When William died in 1894, he left his collection to his son Henry, who greatly expanded the scope of acquisitions, including the contents of a palace in Rome, over 1,700 pieces of Roman and Etruscan antiquities, early Italian paintings, and Renaissance and Baroque works of art. Henry built a large palazzo-style gallery to house the collection in Baltimore and, upon his death in 1931, bequeathed the building and its contents to the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore “for the benefit of the public.”
The museum campus comprises four connected buildings in Baltimore’s historic Mt. Vernon neighborhood. The Walters maintains an active interest in expanding the collection through major donations, bequests, and acquisitions.
In 2006, with initial support from Baltimore City and County, The Walters Art Museum eliminated its general admission fee, increasing attendance by a sustained 40% and building significantly the racial and age diversity of its audience. The Museum has a core membership of 4,500 whose contributions account for nearly 20% of the operating budget. An active program of corporate, foundation and government fundraising rounds out the Walters development program.
