Friends of the Earth Grant Writer

Overview:
Friends of the Earth is a 47-year old, progressive environmental organization that is part of the world’s largest federation of grassroots environmental groups. Friends of the Earth’s programs address a wide range of domestic and international environmental issues, including but not limited to: climate and energy, food and agriculture, oceans and water, economic policy and democracy reform. http://www.foe.org/

The successful candidate will join an grant fundraising team raising $2.5M annually. The Grant Writer is responsible for ensuring that Friends of the Earth submits rigorous funding proposals and reports of the highest quality. Whether drafting original content her/himself or editing content drafted by others, the successful candidate will always bring a critical eye to the project, helping to ensure that we present the most persuasive, strategic content. The candidate will have a demonstrable history working diligently under pressure and successfully meeting tight deadlines 

Responsibilities:
* Reports to the Director of Development and collaborates with a team comprised of program staff, Grants Manager, Sr. Stewardship Officer and Development Director to produce rigorous, high-quality funding requests
* Responsible for editing and drafting original content for fundraising proposals, letters of intent, and reports
* Provides strategic critiques of content generated by program staff in order to maximize quality and competitiveness of funding requests
* Performs prospect research on prospective funders in collaboration with the Grants Manager
* Drafts campaign summaries and other major donor collateral in collaboration with the Sr. Stewardship Officer
* Drafts other fundraising content as needed, including for the news magazine and Annual Report
* Assists with other fundraising projects as requested

Qualifications:
* Passionate about protecting the environment and social justice; a believer in Friends of the Earth’s mission
* 5+ years professional experience
* 3+ years nonprofit grant writing experience
* Demonstrated experience raising over a million annually in private foundation monies
* Successful track record securing 6- and 7-figure grants
* Exceptional written communication skills: passionate about writing; capable of producing substantial content on a wide variety of topics in a short period of time; adapts writing style to meet project needs
* Experience conducting funder research required
* Experience in the environmental sector strongly preferred
* BA or equivalent experience

* Strong teamwork skills: balances team and individual responsibilities; exhibits objectivity and openness to others’ views; gives and welcomes feedback; contributes to building a strong team spirit; supports positive morale and supports everyone’s efforts to succeed
* Planning: respects departmental priorities and builds work plans in accordance with those priorities; sets goals and develops realistic action plans for achieving goals;
* Committed to Diversity: shows respect and sensitivity for cultural differences; promotes a harassments-free work environment
